Zofran in the UK

Postby traceyjs » Jul 13, 2005 3:46 am

Hi I am pregnant with my second child (found out last night!). Had awful HG with my first and am petrified at the prospect of HG again,. I was wondering what other women's experiences have been at getting zofran prescribed in the UK. I couldn't get it prescribed last time round (due to expense apparantly)...despite spending most of my pg in hospital. I was on promethezine in the end which helped very little. I was very proactive this time around and have tried to plan my care before i get ill. But still my GP is saying no he wouldn't prescribe zofran!

Any thoughts, ideas welcome

Thanks

Hiya,

I am from Bristol. You need to go above your GP. Ask to be referred to a specialist, there you may get access to the 'good stuff' ie Zofran or steroids. Other wise, you could go private. BUPA, for example. Natalie (who comes on here) had a consultation there and they said it is possible to get Zofran.

Good luck. I hope you get the help and support you deserve. Oh, and congrats on your pregnancy!!! :D

Hi Tracy

Congratulations on the new pgy :D

As regards Zofran, you can get it over here. It is called Odansetron. Mandy is right though, you need to go above your GP to an Obstetrician. Ask your GP for a referral to the Ob. and when you get to the Ob. then ask again.

From what the Ob. I saw told me, he said they will basically try you on 3-4 other (read: cheaper) meds first and only if they don't work will they give Zofran a shot.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Hi again

There is a post that I started in the Medication Experiences forum entitled 'Zofran in the UK'. A girl posted there who got Zofran off her GP. You might want to go and have a quick looky :)
