3rd time lucky in Australia? not holding my breath!

Postby jemfromoz » Sep 11, 2005 7:38 am

Hello- Jem here from Victoria Australia. I have been agonising over what to do. I definately thought 'NO MORE' after my 2nd hg pregnancy but, as my son nears 2 years old, that familiar clucky feeling is returning. And, as I found last time, the further away the last pregnancy was, the less real it seems.... this web site is a good reminder! We were/are still considering the option of adoption but it seems so be such an uncertain and expensive road, when I could JUST GET PREGNANT -HA! I dont know what to do?!?!
Anyway, the reason I am writing is I am hoping someone else from Victoria may know of a fabulous specialist that I can use (instead of a doctor who implied that I could afford to lose some weight). I know- I'm clutching at straws. This time, though, I feel empowered and grumpy! I WILL ask for what I need and want and I WILL NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER! On the other hand, I am a working Mum with 2 children and a husband that works long hours and, since my last hg experience, I have suffered from depression. I wish there were some easy answers! I only discovered this site after the birth of my second child - this too would have been an amazing source of support. It has grown and developed so much in those 2 short years!
Anyway, I would love to make contact with a Victorian Mum that may know some local secrets! Thanks!

Just wanted to say welcome Jem! :D There are a few ladies on the site her that are from Australia...I hope that they will chime in and be able to help you in your quest for a good doctor and some decent HG treatment.

Joanna

P.S. I love your little phrase about getting "clucky" - that is just great!!

Hi Jem,

I'm from Melbourne, Australia and am 35 weeks pregnant with my first (and probably my last) baby.

I really only found this site a few weeks ago and up until then thought I must have been the only person on the face of the earth that had to go through this, it was so comforting to find I was not alone.

My OB is a guy called Malcolm Barnett. He delivers at Mitcham and Box Hill Hospitals. He's really the only person i've seen about my HG, so I don't really have much to compare him with. All I know is that he was the one that told me I was going into hospital, and he was the one that told me that Zofran was really my only chance. Although I do find him very relaxed about the whole thing (probably because he's never experienced it). I guess though after reading some of the stories on here I can be grateful that he knew what HG was, and he knew how to treat it.

Hopefully some of the other Australian mums can give you some better answers.

Thanks for the replies. Megs, I said 'never agian' after my first, too! I found it takes about 2 years to recover from HG physically and emotionally. Even then the memories are still traumatic and I still have related, ongoing health problems. Thanks for the info. about your doc. My ob was laid back, too. In my dreams I want a female ob. who is sympathetic and pro-active - I dont care how far I have to drive in this state for an appointment! If you hear of someone on the grapevine let me know, and I'll let you know if I hear of this miracle too! Thanks and good luck - it is nearly over. And I'm sure that no-one else in the world looks forward to labour like a woman with HG! Thanks, Jem :)

Hi there Jem and Meg,

My Oh-So-Lovely doctor that got me through my pg moved to Melbourne several months ago. I have no idea where abouts in Melbourne she is practicing, but if you have any ideas on how to locate a Doctor, her name is Katrina Reid. She was starting her internship when I was at my worst, and she has majored in Obstetrics. All the mothers around here, HG or otherwise, LOVED her. She was also the doc who fought my senior OB and my hospital to let me have the prednisolone when I couldn't even keep water down and had lost 10kg, therefore I credit her with my turn around. When I told her I was planning for another baby she worked with me writing out a really pro-active treatment protocol to ensure that I wouldn't have to fight for treatment again.

I'll do a bit of my own detective work and see if I can find her for you.

Take care

:D Wow, Thanks Amanda! I'll ask my GP how to locate doctors and see what I can find out too! What did her pro-active plan involve? Is this something you are using now and do you take it to medical appointmets? Thanks so much for your help. Jem

Jem, I haven't had any luck finding my ex doc yet, but I'll ask when I'm in for my first appointment on Friday. (nervous, this is where I find out if the new doc is really going to honour her plans)

The pro-active plan involved:
She gave me a maxolon prescription in April so that I'd have it as soon as I needed it, and it's for 100 tablets, not the stupid little 3-day prescription docs normally give.
We agreed that I could get some keto-diastix from the chemist (otc, easy to get and not expensive) so that I could test my urine myself for keytones and take myself straight to emergancy for fluids instead of waiting for a doc appointment.
We established that if I've had to go to emergency twice in one week, or 3 times total, I need to be checked in for an overnight stay to balance my system and get properly rehydrated.
We established that I should be allowed to try a prednisolone prescription before I need to stay overnight in hospital
We established that I'm not a sook that runs to the doctor everytime I feel a little queasy, and therefore it is quite reasonable for my doc to take me seriously, and that not having to fight for care makes the concentrating on staying well easier.

That's the general gist of it. Have a good look around the "preparation" forum for some more tips. I think I discussed my protocol at length in a thread called something like "Any tips for questions to ask my doc" (?not sure, it was a while since I looked at that one).

Good luck
