Implanon

Postby di » Sep 04, 2006 5:33 am

Hi ladies..well LONG time since I posted.

Went to a family planning clinic with my hubby earlier in the week.
Long story short:

* I had to have my mirena out due to pelvic inflammation and excessive bleeding

* I had a depo injection and hate the side effects

* I have used several pills in the past - all give me nausea :verygreen:

* I think i have mild latex allergy

* I am about to try implanon as a last ditch resort before DH gets a vasectomy, which i really don't want him to do. :?

Does anyone have anything they can tell me about Implanon?? i know all the "facts" of it but what about real side effects - and things the brochure/website doesnt tell you???

Thanks so much

Unfortunately the Implanon took forever to get FDA approval in the US. It was approved a few months ago and still has yet to be released and marketed, so none of the US folks are going to be of help. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it's just that birth control has somehow become a taboo subject in our country. A lot of people really loved the old Norplant though - it was just like everything else, if it works well for you, you love it.

Do you have the NuvaRing down under? I know a lot of people who had side effects with pills who have had none with that.

I'm sorry you are running low on options.

Thanks Aimee, I was not aware it wasn't available in the USA.

I hadn't heard of the NuvaRing, maybe it isn't available here. I have checked it out on Wikipedia though, and found that it probably wouldn't be suitable as I seem to have problems with Estrogen. Thanks though, and I will keep my eyes peeled for anything like that which becomes available in Australia.

Hi Di

I personally havent tried it. But 2 of my mates have. One got it removed because she had constant spotting, but unlike the depo, if you get it removed the effects stop almost immediately. The other has had no problems with it at all. Was reading somewhere that spotting is extremely common, and they are trying something out that may stop it. But I cant remember how long ago this was.[/code]

Hi guys..

I had the Implanon implant for two years..

I can be totally honest and say that yes there were a few side effects, but ones that I would happily cope with for not having to worry about contraception in that time.

Firstly, I was one of the lucky ones who ended up with no periods at all.. but that is only a chance..

Secondly, when I would have been due a period, I did suffer from a mild headache on the first day, but nothing I couldn't cope with.

Thirdly, as I am quite a thin person, I did suffer a little skin irritation at the site of the implant, due to it being close to the surface of the skin.. but again all worth it for the not having to worry part..

I think that most people here in the UK that have the implant find that the most annoying side effects (which not everyone gets) would be the slight weight increase.. or the risk of infection at the implantation site..

I think if you are looking for a long term solution without having to worry about taking pills, or having an injection, Implanon is a good contraception.

Obviously due to family medical history checks they do, there is a small risk you take in not actually being able to have it.. but I think its rare that they decline it.

I believe there is good and bad in all forms of contraception, so ideal to speak to someone about all options..

The only warning I will give... is when you have it taken out at the end of the three years (if thats how long you decide to keep it in) you either have it replaced straight away, or use another form of contraception IMMEDIATELY if you don't want the risk of PG... 80% of people I have read about (and myself included) have fallen PG within a week of having it removed..

All that in mind.. good luck with your choice..

You might look into Natural Family Planning. A lot of people that get the nausea and headaches are intolerant of the excess hormones. So something non-hormone in nature might be a better bet for you. The Billings Method of NFP was developed in Austrailia. And is the most common one taught there. It is really easy to learn and is 98% effective in preventing pg. I would really discourage a vasectomy as it greatly increases the risk of prostate cancer.

If you are interested this is a website that has a list of all of the teaching centers: http://www.billings-ovulation-method.or ... Frame.html
