? about zofran: can you have withdrawal symptoms?

Hi! I am 27 weeks pg. this is my second pregnancy with HG and i am getting frustrated. last time, i was much better by this stage, and only needed zofran once in a while- certainly not every day. this time, i still need 4 mg every day. i take it at 10 or 11 at night, and if i do, i am fine the next day. but at least once a week i try not to take it (i am trying to avoid it altogether!) and when i make this attempt, it always fails. i start retching as soon as i wake up and it will continue every 20 minutes. usually i break down and just take the 4 mg of zofran by like 8 AM. it helps, but on those days, i feel nauseous periodically throughout the day.

my ? is: is it that the pregnancy is STILL making me sick, or could i , on those mornings after not taking the zofran, be sick b/c withdrawal or the like? it is so hard to tell - all i know is that last time i didnt need it at this stage. i am frustrated. tonight i a going to take it at 10 or 11 but only 2 mg this time.

anyone have any insight? thanks so much!

No physical withdrawal that I know of--it sounds to me as if your body still needs some. I never got lower than 12mgs a day, and by the end I was back up to 16mgs a day to control.

I don't know of any withdrawal, I think its just the body still needing it. I am doing the exact same thing as you at the moment. Trying to get off the stuff! I tried 4mg at night for a week, and had to have maxalon during the day to get through it. I have now found that if I have 2mg at night and 2mg first thing in the morning I am surviving. If I wake up late and take the zofran even an hour late, I wake up gagging though. I think I am down to the lowest dose I can do at the moment. As long as I get up a few times in the night to eat though, I can get to 6am to take it. For me its just about eating heaps (never thought I'd be saying that!), and taking it right on 12 hourly.

Hope this helps! :)

I agree that your body still needs it.. I haven't heard of any withdrawl symptoms.

Seems like there are a group of us trying to wean off Zofran - myself included. I just created a new post in the 2nd tri folder. I am also down to 4 mgs a day - 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. I did get down to 2 mgs a day and then within 2 days I was feeling really bad again. I also had the same experience - once I try to skip a dose - even if I take the 2 mgs later when I feel sick - I never get the full relief. I still feel mildly sick for that whole day. It's almost like if I'm off schedule, the Zofran is not as effective. I definatley found this to be the case when I was on a high dose, but it seems true for these low doses as well...

Best of luck and let's keep sharing our experiences.. My advice is listen to your body - if it's not ready it's certainly not shy in letting us know that..

I took Zofran during my pregnacy for about four to five months. My daughter was born in 2000 and I have been fine. No problems from the meds.

My daughter on the other hand is a different story. She is 'active'. I don't know if it is related or not, but I have come here to find out. There are no studies to my knowledge about the effects on the babies.

I would have taken any risk I had to while I was preg, but now I have questions and there doesn't seem to be answers.

MY Dr wa convinced you can become addicted to it, but its really just your body needing the meds, you are not going through withdrawel.. I was on zofran until the day I delievered and went "cold turkey"! My body just didnt need it anymore! Rest asure, your HG may just be a little longer this pregnancy.... zofran is not a addictive drug!

I never experienced any kind of withdrawal from Zofran - this is my second time taking it, and if you are feeling sick, then it's probably the pregnancy!

The amazing thing was, after my first birth, I began to feel better within HOURS of delivery. It was like a wave coming over me, I started feeling human again for the first time in 8 months. I did not need ANY Zofran after that.

My doctor has never suggested that there could be any kind of addiction to the medication. (Personally, it sounds to me like another person second guessing the validity of this illness!)

Best wishes to you!
