Hi, sorry I haven't seen this post. I just found it!
Nope, I am not in labor, Robin. But maybe next week!
Anyway, yes, vistaril is a drug from the 1950s. In fact, I was given it for the first time with #2, as the OB I went to shared an office with his dad and his dad used it for his HGers. My mom used it when she was pregnant and she said it helped a lot. You can use it in a variety of forms. The first three pgs I used it as an injection. With this one, I have taken it by mouth. I like it that way better because I don't have to wait until the office is open or someone can come give me the shot. I kept up on the nausea pretty well this time around.
It is actually considered an antianxiety and used sometimes with post surgical nausea. It is also a lot cheaper than the other drugs. I paid ten dollars for 30 pills. My OB this time around said I probably responded well to it because my HG was probably related to motion sickness. Now, I have never had motion sickness, but he said this could be a possible reaction.
As far as getting the doc to agree to try it, with my OB the last two pgs, he gave it to me because the zofran did not touch me, and I was so dehydrated, he finally asked me what helped before. That was when I got it. With this last pg, I went in before getting pg and asked him how he treated HG. I wanted a feel for what I was in for. And he turned the question back on me. He also gave me other medication options that we could try as well. It is good to have a backup plan in case it doesn't work. Like with Robin, not every drug works for every HGer. But it is certainly worth a try. My Ob and I came up with a plan of action and it actually worked this time around! I ended up with no hospital visits. Came close a few times, but still avoided them.
I would shop around for an OB and ask them what they think. There are some docs who consider vistaril to be a class D drug. So beware of that, and that may be why they are very reluctant to use it. I took it in the first trimester and half way through the second trimester with four pgs and no problems to the baby.
So good luck! I hope you are able to find a doc who will work with you and you find a regimen that helps! Let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
