Caffine Intake in pregnancy

Postby Atsie » Nov 09, 2006 4:21 pm

Here is info from an article I was reading regarding caffine intake. This info is from the magazine Today's Parent, Pregnancy and Birth.

According to Health Canada preganant women should limit their caffine intake to less than 300 mg a day.

The following is a list of the approximate caffine content of drinks.

Brewed Coffee
grande, large or 16 oz 270 mg caffine
tall, medium or 12 oz 203 mg
regular or 8 oz 135 mg

Energy Drinks*
16 oz monster can 160 mg
11.9 oz can 120 mg
8.3 oz can 80 mg

Tea
8 oz 42 mg

Cola Drinks
1 can/ 355ml/12 oz 42 mg

*Keep in mind these drinks can get the energy boost from herbs such as guarana or yerba mate which act like caffeine. But you wont see caffeine on the label unless they add pure caffeine.

Now keep in mind, if it worked, I drank it. I just found that seeing the numbers really helped. That is about 7 cans of pop!

Hope that helps.

That's good info to have. Good to see my cola drinks so low on the list  . Thanks for posting this.

Do frappucinos count as Brewed Coffee? That was the only caffiene intake during either of my pregnancies - I craved them horribly at the end of my second when HG slowed down.

I don't know. I looked at Starbucks but they don't list how much caffeine is in thier drinks. I was hooked on the ice caps for awhile with this pg. I imgaine this baby is going to be jonesing for caffeine at birth!

Hmmm, I don't know about anyone else, but if caffeine is the only drink I can tolerate then I'll drink as much as I can, surely too much caffeine is better than no fluids at all?

Besides, we are not "normal" pregnant women..LOL

I wanted to post those numbers since often times women think one can of pop is too much. But that is over 6 cans of pop a day! So I thought it would help other Moms feel good that when they do drink caffeine it isn't the end of the world. We all know to drink what works.

And I all i drank was caffinated pop.... Cameron should have a Pepsi logo on her forhead!

that is good info to know! I had a soda 4 weeks ago and it really made me feel better for a time - it's the only one I had though because I was afraid the caffeine would hurt the baby. now i think I'll go drink one today :)
