Does anyone know if Merriun Erick actually takes patients? Is she an OB? A nutritionist? I've heard wonderful things about her, and she is actually an acquantance of my MIL, but I am wondering if she'd actually see me? Does anyone know of a good peri or OB in the Boston area? We are very likely moving there.

PS. I own No More Morning Sickness, but couldn't read it when I was pregnant! Guess it wasn't meant for hgers, huh?

Miriam Erick is a Dietician, if I remember right. She does do consults, and she is paid by the hour. I know that she is very concerned about malnutrition and HGers, but have never really been able to get any concrete information out of her about what she recommends about anything.

I've heard that she's great with recommendations that we offer as basics here (and Motherisk will counsel HGers on for free), and haven't communicated with anyone who had more info to offer past that. I've wanted to read her books but haven't been able to run across them, and have heard that they aren't very practical for severe HGers - but have been unable to form my own concrete opinion, yet.

I'd love to know more about how helpful she has been, or not been from women who have consulted with her. I think my biggest concern is that most often insurance companies will not cover consults with dieticians, and many HGers are strapped for money, especially when they are on Zofran, so I'd hate to recommend her not really knowing anything concrete about how worthwhile it would be for an HGer to expend that money.

I do have her contact information if you are interested. She stops in at HuGS from time to time to leave sketchy updates. She does seem to genuinely care about HG becoming much more well-known, has a well-known name, and political connections that help to further the cause of HG.

I had to laugh at this...I think I picked her book up from the library during my first pg. Just reading it would make me throw up!! Guess it might be helpful to read pre-pg. But just too much info & food ments for during the worst of it!!

I live just outside of Boston. I met with her twice, once at 20 weeks at the advice of the head of OB at Brigham and Womens Hospital (my own OB sent me to him for a consult out of desperation of what to do with me), which my insurance covered, and once a few months before I conceived my second. She's very good one-on-one. I found her to be very helpful. I liked her book, but parts of it regarding food did make me sick while I was pregnant. Its also not written expressly for HG, but as a more general morning sickness survival guide. I've also been in touch with her directly via email and find her email style to be very quick and curt. Her posts in HuGs that I've seen are in a similar style and don't seem to do justice to her real interest and research into the topic. In short, she was MUCH better in person than in cyberspace. If your insurance would cover a visit with her, I'd recommend it. If not, paying out of pocket is expensive, I think about $150 for an hour.

Thank you so much for writing! I've always wondered about Miriam one-on-one, so I'm glad to hear that she was helpful. I tried reading part of her book once HG started, but by then it didn't really help me. And I've read her posts also at HuGs, and wasn't sure about her approach to HG.

Just out of curiosity, would you mind sharing some of her ideas that helped you?

Thanks!

Hi Anna-My name is Kelly. I left that out! When I first saw Miriam I was at the end of my rope. It was my first pregnancy, I didn't know a tenth of what I know now. She was the first person to tell me to eat whatever appealed to me whenever it appealed to me. Junk food was pretty much all that ever appealed, and that was rare. Her saying to go ahead and eat it was very freeing to me. She also taught me to break down what I wanted into categories like sweet, salty, etc and to keep solids and liquids separate. I re-learned all these things from the women at HuGS for my second pregancy, but Miriam saved me back in '99. She also suggested for my IVs to run a lot slower, and that something be added which I don't recall. She called me at home to check up on me and contacted my OB on my behalf. She also ran a "buddy" system linking women who were stuggling. Of course I can only speak to my own experience with her, but it was positive. I will say that this forum has always been the most helpful thing for me since you all "get it". Let me know if you do move to Boston!

Thanks so much for the info. It sounds like Miriam would be very helpful, esp for 1st time HGers. And I love the idea of local support systems!

I'm not, and never will be again since my husband had a vasectomy in May. I had my daughter in '99 and my son in '02. When are you due?? Is this your first pregnancy? Please let me know if I can ever do anything for you. Nice to "meet" someone who is so close!

I'm due in November and doing very well. I was extremely proactive. I have a son born 98' and this is my fourth pregnancy. Thanks for the offer but I am really doing well.
