Would you get a new doctor?

Postby skamomma » Mar 14, 2007 8:22 pm

Ok, I live in Austin, TX, so no teaching hospitals. There seems to be very few high risk OBs. My hyperemesis is improving, but between that, fibromyalgia, and being overweight I think I should get someone who deals with high risk. Anyway, I got a doc, and I think she is good medically, but she has already rubbed me the wrong way. She has one of the best reputations in town. So I get a call from billing, and after we took Cobrawhen hubby lost job which is mighty expensive, they are DUMPING all of their Blue Cross Blue Shield patients!!! Can you believe that? If they decide to classify me officially as high risk, they'll stay with me. If not I have to find a new doctor. And if I stay, I probably will just leave it alone, but I still think this is so unethical. Oh, and they are a HUGE OB practice, one of the biggest in town. They are all dumping BCBS.

Update... the doc decided I am not high risk. Doesn't hyperemesis automatically make me high risk?

This doctor from Austin is on the referral list http://www.austinwomenscare.com/reue.htm

The gal who recommended him was one of my best buddies from the board and she had quite a few complications and thought he was great.

BCBS lowers the reimbursements for doctors every year. I'm sure that is why they are dropping them, but I'm sure it sucks to get caught in the middle.

I'd go ahead and find a new doc, especially given that you aren't 100% comfortable with your current doc. My understanding is that HG is not a high risk condition unless it's uncontrolled and causing other complications.

I was told the same thing about HG not being classified as high risk (although it should be considering how many of us are hospitalized for it) .

Where I live, you need a referral from your existing OB to see a high-risk doctor at a perinatal center. I was able to get the HR classification because of previous hypertension.

I would look for a new office that has an OB on staff that 1) has experience dealing with HG &/or 2) has a doctor on staff who's a maternal-fetal specialist.
