Help for my daughter

Postby kimd1971 » Feb 24, 2016 10:49 am

I just found this forum while searching for answers online. I will try to keep this short. I have read tons of info and have not found a case that seems as severe as what we are dealing with. My daughter has been sick since the end of December. She vomits several times a day, every day. She has lost 60+lbs (she was overweight to begin with at 237lbs). She has been in the hospital for 4 weeks now. Last Tuesday she had her gall bladder removed because they thought that would help. While she did have gall stones, she has continued to see no improvement. She literally cannot eat a bite of food. Even sips of water come right back up. They inserted an NG tube yesterday and are suppose to start giving her something through the tube today. Please tell me she is going to get through this and be ok. She is so weak at this point, she can not get up and go to the bathroom without assistance.

Hi, I'm sorry your daughter is suffering so, and I can only imagine the pain that you are going through watching her. I have only experienced HG myself, I have not watched someone I love dearly go through it. But that can be just as scary as dealing with it. I can tell you from my experience, I lost 30lbs with my first pg because the Dr I saw didn't believe I was so sick. I had been admitted to the hospital 2x for 3 days each, but in and out of the ER constantly because I was always dehydrated. I was given a PICC eventually, which is like a very long IV, to get medicines and fluids daily. Some drs prefer feeding tubes while others prefer PICC, so it is mostly a matter of preference.

How far along is your daughter? What meds has she tried that you know of? I can tell you I had issues with my gallbladder after my second was born and eventually had it removed, but I have heard of others here that had it removed while pg as well. I was considered overweight when I got pg both times, and only with the first did I lose so much that I was eventually considered underweight (I only lost 15lbs the second round, but I was also even heavier at that time). If you do a search here on the forums, I came across 133 pages of people mentioning am NG tube, so it definitely has been done before. There is also a medications list on the main page that you can bring to her Dr to explore other options. So many women find they need more than one medicine, so don't be afraid of a cocktail of them. The baby seems to take what it needs, no matter what. It is just mom that falls apart. I hope this gives you a bit of hope that she can make it through this. If she can tolerate a computer screen (or you can read to her), we have a support group on Facebook that she can join (you can too). That group is constantly asking questions as well, although feel free to stay here, look around, and post more. I will try to check here again over the next few days.

Hi. So glad you found us. Sounds like she is having a very rough time! Gall bladder removal is too often performed and I have yet to see a single mom have remission of HG as a result. It's unfortunate. I'm glad they are starting nutritional therapy. If she can tolerate the NG tube, that would be great. They will need to start VERY slow feeds and advance slowly. Please let us know what meds she is on. We are here to help. So glad you are getting help for her!
