Looking for HG specialist:

I had my daughter at Yale-New Haven Hospital 12/30/2002. Liked my OBs but in retrospect they were not at all proactive. They did give me twice weekly B6 injections and prescribed Phenergan, which helped break vomiting cycles but necessitated 5-6 hours of sleep after each suppository.

Recently terminated a pregnancy (with horrible regret after) because at my first OB visit (same practice), having already been sick for two weeks, the head OB told me there was nothing new they could offer me. Can't say how much I wish I had found this site three weeks ago instead of five days after I terminated.

Anyway, I might consider a third child if I had a doctor who was more on the ball with HG. I see no one in your referral network, but hoping someone here might be able to help out.

Thanks,
Cecca

Cecca -

I'm so sorry to hear that you did not get the treatment you needed with your last pregnancy. It makes me so sad and upset to hear that HG sufferers are not presented with every single available treatment! And I want you to know that I feel for you with your recent loss...that heartache must be so overwhelming! My thoughts are with you.

I just know that we can find a great doctor for you. If you can give me the city where you live as well as the hospital where you'd like to be seen, it would be very helpful. I'll help you all I can to find the names of some prospective doctors...and then you can call to get their perspective on HG treatments.

Hope to hear from you soon! I promise I'll do all I can to find the right match for you!

Cecca,

I am so sorry to hear you did not get the treatment you so despieratly needed. Your post caught my eye, as I too live in CT. I am not sure how much more proactive my DR was, as I feel I know more about HG than him now, but I used Dr Gerald Foye who practices at Danbury Hospital. He specializes in maternal-fetal care. He was great, but I found the majority of the other Docs in the practice were not NEARLY as proactive. It also annoys me that he thought I was addicted to zofran, but boy did I prove him wrong after I delievered. I am thinking about TTC this fall/early spring. I am making my own protcol to present to him at a yearly visit in August. I was not diagnosed with HG until I was about 10 to 11 weeks along, and I feel by being much more proactive it can be better. I am also going to talk to him about med combos, as I have heard these can work well. I was on TPN last time and hope to avoid it again. I am willing to consider steroids, but I do not really like all of the side effects that they can cause. Steroids were never even mentioned to me last time. Good luck with your Dr search. I was told by my case worker from my insurance co (during my last pregnacy) that some of the DRs at Yale use steroids to treat HG. I am sorry I do no know which ones.

Good luck and let me know if you find anything out. I might be willing to travel if you find a great HG doc!

HuGS,

Robin

Hi Robin,
So glad to get your message. In this same forum under my other post ("Physician Help") there is information about a High Risk Pregnancy Program at Yale. Coincidentally, I just talked to them for the first time today and they seemed (from the Care Coordinator I talked to) very knowledgeable about HG and the many ways to try to combat it. They will see a non-pregnant woman for a "Pre-Conceptual Consult", or of course see you after you become pregnant. This group seems to be made up of Maternal-Fetal medicine specialists, and I was told that they can either manage your care completely, or co-manage with your own physician/OB. They do everything but regular GYN care.

I'm not sure how far you are from Yale (Danbury is far from me but maybe you're east of there?), but if the drive wouldn't be too much it could be worth a shot. I'm glad to hear you at least had someone who was willing to try things beyond entry-level morning sickness treatment. Hey, if you get pregnant I will for sure be your moral support buddy! Having had two, I can say it's harder the second time with worry about caring for your first child. I would definitely suggest having daycare/childcare lined up in advance. Also, though it will seem awful to have to be apart from your little one for days on end (if it comes to that--hopefully not), she will be fine! When you're well again they rush right back into your arms as if not a day had passed without you.

The link to the Yale Maternal-Fetal Medicine website is:

http://info.med.yale.edu/obgyn/mfm/risk.html

and you can get to the High Risk Pregnancy Program info., including contact phone numbers, via:

http://www.yalemds.org/ProgPage.asp?nam ... cy+Program

Feel free to email me back if you have any trouble getting to this information. I have all the phone numbers written down and can email them to you. The Care Coordinator, whose voice-mail I was directed to, is named Candace Kohn (sp? pronounced "cone"), and she was very willing to chat about my history, etc.

Best of luck to you and do keep in touch. It's good to know I'm not the only one in Conn. with this affliction.

Sick in CT, too

Postby cthmschler » Jun 30, 2004 7:39 pm

Hello ladies, I'm from CT, also.
I live in Sprague and I see a wonderful mid-wife in New London, who works with a partner mid-wife and 3 OBs. They've been great at fighting my insurance company to keep me on IVs and getting the Zofran I need. They are also quite willing to research and consider any new options I bring to them (mainly from this site).

Teresa -

If you haven't already done it, will you please add this group of doctors to the Referral Network here?

Thanks so much!
