Any Aussies out there??

Postby aussietwirler » May 05, 2006 1:37 am

I note there are some old entries and I only found this site by accident. But if there are any Australian HG sufferers out there I would love to hear from you.

I am 25 weeks with twins and having a hell of a time.

Mara,

I'm about 3 hours away from you, near the Grampians. I think I'm the only other Aussie posting very often at the moment, although there are a few others that resurface every now and then.

How are you going for care? Does your doc understand what's going on and take you seriously? What drugs are you on? I'm on Maxolon and Ranitidine, and now counting down the days until I can stop taking them. What about your fluid levels? I'm guessing that you must have been going through the worst of your HG during all that horrid excessive heat in January. That must have been very hard.

Is this your first pg?

Feel free to pm me any time

Amanda,

I'm on Zofran, after maxolon and Stemetil didn't seem to to work.

I guess I did go through the worst part during the heat and used to watch the weather forecast and cringe if it was going to be hot.

I stilll feel like I'm going through the worst, because I'm so sick of the nausea, and thanks to the fact this is twins my back and hips have already had it.

I look with jealousy at your ticker because this is nearly over for you. I still have what seems like ages to go. 26 weeks on Tuesday and praying I go early... 36 weeks would be good.

This is my second pregnancy and swore I would never do this again last time. Hubby, family and friends talked me around... so it's their fault!!

Good luck, thanks and here's my e-mail address aussietwirler@hotmail.com

Mara,

I was dreading the hot days, and I was in my second trimester by then. I can only imagine what it must have been like for you.

I totally get the jealousy of another person's ticker being so far along. You will get there too. I didn't think I would, but I have. :) 26 weeks is still good, though. You are 65% done, which is heaps better than the poor ladies still stuck in their first tri. You'll be third tri in just another week or so! Try focussing on that. My second tri really got me down, crying all the time and friends worried about serious depression issues for me, but the milestones in the third tri have helped me to pick up again.

Did you get any relief from the nausea last pg? I still feel awful most days, but at this stage the tiredness and the nausea are sort of blended into one complaint of generally feeling bleh. I can imagine that it's heaps worse with twins. I guess you won't be letting people talk you around to a third pg?!

Take care, :)

I know I should be grateful I'm further along than some and in some ways it's not as bad as the first trimester... but sooooooo sick of the nausea.... I hate waking each day knowing what lays ahead.

I have been diagnosed with pre-natal depression, as I was with my DD 6 years ago. I had nausea 9 mths with her and was very reluctant to go around again. So will never ever do this again!

It is much harder with twins I have to admit. Last pregnancy I just had the nausea and vomiting. This time around I'm much heavier and uncomfortable. I have chronic hip pain and have difficulty sleeping. Also suffer from lots of dizzy spells and have fainted quite a few times, so almost house bound these days.

I am just praying for the days to go quickly (which they don't) and for this to be over. I miss me.... and food!!

Oh to eat and drink what I like when I like... it seems a lifetime away, but everyone assures me it's not.

Hi Mara.

I know that "the life beyond" can feel like a complete fantasy that someone dreamed up to tease you with. ((((Hugs)))) I've only been getting out of the house generally no more than once a week for months and months now, and the isolation is a killer, especially if you're prone to depression anyway.

You will get there. You really really will.

I can imagine how uncomfortable you are. I remember my mother pregnant with twins. She was housebound from 7 or 8 months without adding HG to the equation, and (sorry, bad news I know) needing support to get around at all for the last month or so, but she was so tired she just slept most of the time anyway. Dad had to cut back his work days to take care of the house and my brothers and I. She was HUGE, and here's pathetic me whinging about being bigger than I was with my first, but at least only carrrying one!

Do you have lots of support to help you with your DD for the next few months? I assume she's at school, so do you have friends that can do the morning and afternoon runs for you? Maybe even keep her for an hour or two after school? It makes for a big day for a little girl, but may be well worth it. All those people who talked you into doing this again can now step up and help get you through it.

There is another lady here, and American, who had twins the second time around. I'm not sure of the age gap between them and the older sibling, but I do know that she would be a very understanding listener. I think her name is Teddi, unless I'm mixed up (which is possible at this stage of my very muddy-brained pg).

Thinking of you

Aussie HG

Postby klm22 » May 18, 2006 5:03 pm

Hi fellow australian sufferers. I had HG with my daughter in 05 and am contemplating pregnancy again (yes insane idea!). I had my gall bladder removed straight after pregnancy so im hoping that the gall bladder contributed to the severity of the HG (although i think it was probably just a result of the starvation). ANyway, do you know if its possible to get zofran on PBS or any cheaper way in Aust? I was on it for my entire pregnancy but we went into debt with me unable to work and the cost of zofran ($6k) so god knows how we could afford it this time.

best of luck to you both you are over the worst, but i know every day is still torture.

Dear K,

Lovely to hear from another Aussie.

My local pharmacist is really good and we got it slightly cheaper with the following method.

Doc only wrote one script at a time and didn't make it a repeat.
I got 4 x 8 mg tabs for $30, but if was a repeat it was $68!!

I does depend on pharmacy though. I stayed at MIL once and they charged me the full price and I cried.

Doc has to write lots of scripts dated differently and this is how I get around it.

Took me 5+ years to go second time around and will say that after this pregnancy, I will never ever do it again. Took a lot of convincing from everybody, especially hubby for this one!!

Hello from Adelaide

Postby DebbieS » May 20, 2006 7:57 am

Hi! Debbie here from Adelaide. I'm not pregnant now, but have had two pregnancies and HG both times - second time was the worst. Just wanted to say hi and hang on in there.

(I've been reading the forums for a while now - this is my first posting :) Currently considering TTC, but I'm a bit apprehensive.)

Zofran

Postby DebbieS » May 20, 2006 8:04 am

Hi !

Forgot to say, the second pregrancy we got Zofran through the hospital (Women's and Childrens)- and it was lots cheaper. I would get scripts through their Emergency Department (Women's Assessment) (I was a frequent visitor!), and get them filled at their pharmacy. Cost about $28 for 1-2 weeks supply (incomparable to normal costs). Disadvantage was having to wait an hour or so while sick. I had been planning on having my baby there, so they were willing to give me scripts for medication till my first appointment with the Obst. came up.

Just wanted to say welcome K and Deb! :D I'm not from Australia but a sister country in the Commonwealth! (Canada) :) We struggle with getting Zofran prescribed and the costs of it too... :(

Glad you found us here! Good luck to you both.

Hi Jade,

How are you going for fluids? Your drugs will work best if you are well hydrated, which I know is hard, but it's worth the trip to hospital for an IV if it keeps the meds working. I've just surfaced after 9 months of maxolon myself, and it sucks but if you can keep your fluid levels up it's better than nothing. Also, I added ranitidine, which is an ant-acid in tablet form (easier to get down and keep down) which I think made a big difference this pregnancy, too.

Good luck.

Hello. :)

I'm on the CEntral Coast of N.S.W. and I'm currently preparing my my case to put to DH for a third baby. :lol And yes, he is going to think I'm completely insane too!

I've had HG with both previous pregnancies, the last with my son, born in '02 was especially severe and extremely traumatic. My husband , after being terrified by the doctors telling him how lucky I was to make it through alive, fears that I may just have used up all of my luck.

Anyhow, I just wanted to say how astounded I was to find an absolute dearth of Australian HG support resources online (or anywhere for that matter) but very pleased to find this particular site.

Cheers!

im having major problems keeping fluids down, most things the taste makes me sick, even water atm. I do manage to keep down prob about 500 ml or so a day. But according to the drs im not dehydrated, so I dont need iv rehydration. On top of it all, I got blood results today and my iron levels are really low, so the dr wants me on iron tablets as well, but they make me feel worse and I havent been able to keep one down yet.

Jade,

You could try alternating with Stemetil which is not too expensive.

I was actually put into hospital so I didn't get too dehydrated at one stage. I had a really good doctor who understood my history and put me in hospital and had fluids, Zofran and steroid via IV and a break from the 'real world' for a few days.

Maxalon did nothing for me, if anything I felt it made me worse and I have found out recently that it is linked to depression.

I have also been told my iron levels are low and trying to drink Ferro Force. This better than the tablet option and is better for constipation.

I also found a way to keep hydrated was to drink heaps after throwing up, as I was unlikely to throw up for a little while and it might stay down.

Mabel,

Right now I am so over this pregnancy and will not do this again!! 2 HG pregnancies enough for me & hubby agreed to get the snip. I guess you are a stronger person than me. Mind you after twins I think I will have my hands full anyway.

Good luck to you both :)

Iron

Postby Hurlygirl » May 28, 2006 10:25 am

Jade

Have the same problem with iron. The pills were impossible and the liquid made me puke. I was recommended a herbal treatment called Floradix here in the UK. This seemed to work -- while I could keep it down! Not sure if it is available in Oz.

Good luck.

Lisa

PS: Only 500ml per day. Don't know how you could be hydrated on that... Are they saying you are ok because you don't have ketones? I had trace ketones, but the doc did bloodwork that showed bad dehydration. If you feel lousy and have the other signs of dehydration, maybe you need to try again with the doc. Hard I know.

Hi Mabel,

Convincing others that you want to TTC again is difficult. I was surprised to find my side of the family reluctant for me to get pregnant again after losing the last pregnancy, because they were so worried last time. I'm still trying to convince my Mum that its a good idea.

Mara & Jade, I hope that things get better for you both & soon!

Amanda, congratulations of the birth of Henry!

Jade,

You can monitor your own ketone levels with "keto-diastix" that are available over the counter at the chemist. If you get moderate to high levels on those, which are basically the same as the sticks they use at the doctors, then you definitely need attention and you are quite entitled to go straight to the hospital without waiting for your doctor to suggest it.

If you're not drinking, then you WILL be dehydrated, regardless of what your apparently unsympathetic doc has to say. If you're really getting nowhere, try writing down every attempt to eat/drink, every vomit, and how frequently you go to the toilet. Then take someone who loves you with you to the doc, and get them to argue in your favour. You sound to me to be too sick to have to defend yourself right now.

((((hugs))))
