I am ttc and am dreading being pregnant since I've had HG 9 times (all but one miscarried, which makes it even more horrible.) Anyway, I read that steroids are not recommended until after 10 weeks, but I get horribly ill around 6 weeks. My only fullterm pregnancy was my first child, and the nausea stopped at 14 weeks, so if I have to wait until 10 weeks, it hardly seems to take care of the main problem. Has anyone started steroids earlier, like around 6 or 7 weeks and been ok?

Yes, I did start steroids earlier. My baby was perfectly healthy but, unfortunately, the steroids didn't help whatsoever at all. I started them at around 6 weeks and ended up hospitalized with a PICC and TPN while I was still on them (my HG actually got really, really bad and peaked while I was on the steroids).
I don't think they are a huge enough risk not to try them early if you need them but just don't count 100% on them working. I am not sure if it was just me or if it was because I tried them so early on and they just weren't effective at that stage.
GL!
